Tachiwatari(crossing of the long sword) of the Naginatagumi

Around 9:00 a.m., a procession of the naginatagumi arrives at Hachimangu Shrine.
The procession is said to be modeled after Minamoto no Yoshiie’s visit to Nagahama Hachimangu Shrine, with large gold coins at the front of the procession, a rikishi leading the warriors, followed by child warriors in armor wearing long wooden swords measuring two to three meters in length, accompanied by their followers.
The name “Tachiwatari” (sword crossing) is derived from the long wooden sword worn by the child warriors, and the name of the clan is also derived from this.
The rikishi who are striven by the young men of the naginatagumi wear kimono with a crest, a square sash, a suso karaage, and a make-up sash in front of their waists. This is commonly called “shirimaki.
